Your place at the table

In my Bible class we have to write in a journal every day and turn it in on Friday when Mr. W will tell us what the prompt for the next week will be and he gives us homework that he says is to get us thinking about the prompt he gives.  Yesterday he took our journals and our homework is to draw or describe the dinner table and to say if we all got a seat we sit in every time and if the seat we are sat in means anything. The prompt for our journal is that tables are mentioned in the Bible over 50 times so what do we think is important about the table and how do we as families live our Christian beliefs at our family table.

At our table my mom sits at one end and my dad is at the other end. Me and Ruby sit on one side and Ruby is next to our mom and I am next to our dad and Scarlette sits on the other side all by herself but she sits at our moms end of the table on her side. I don't know if were we sit means anything except maybe Ruby being the youngest needed more help when me and Scarlette didn't but you know when Ruby was a little bitty baby in a high chair or something I wasn't living here. At home with my first mom we ate in the living room mostly on trays and watched TV. But no how I don't know how we live our Christian faith at the table cause my dad isn't even a believer so you know we don't really say grace or nothing except when it is a special occasion with company over if the company are people who say grace.

How do you sit at the table and does were somebody sits mean anything and how do you live out your Christian faith at your table?  Help. I need answers.

That's an interesting question. Do you recline at your table? There seems to be an awful lot of table reclining in the Bible and here I scold mine for elbows on the table. I sit on one end with Simon on my right and Saylor on my left, because they're the youngest and needed help while Susan and Stacy could feed themselves. Each new baby meant scooching down for whoever was the last baby. Baby A and Baby B will take over the next to mama spaces because someone (me) has to catch the bowls they shove or feed them before they pitch fits. It is all about who needs me the most at that time.
We do say grace before eating because we are practicing Christians.
Your dad may not be a believer but do you spend your dinner time sharing with each other, conversation about your day or plans? Letting someone into your world and loving them is a very Christian quality.

We pray before dinner and sometimes we have a lesson during dinner.  We always set an extra place at the table for Jesus.

Where do we sit? Mum at one end and my dad at the other. Clare and I sit at either side of our mum and Noah and Zach sit at either side of my dad. We are a gender divided table. Both my parents are prayers so we do say grace before we eat but the conversation during the meal is not always terribly Christlike.

My mom sits at one end and me and Misty sit on one side and Tiff and Atticus on the other side. When my dad is home he sits at the other end but a lot of times my grandma is here and she'll sit there but not eat. We sometimes say grace but not always.

So today with the table in my journal I am supposed to write about how the person on my right shows me Gods love and so that means I have to write that about my agnostic dad.

An interesting question Rosie; by tradition, the male head of the household, sits at the head of the table. These days, many families no loner sit at a table; they prefer to sit around the Drawing Room, eating off trays and watching television. A table is the one means of getting the family together at least twice a day, and should be encouraged (but mobiles and electronic items be banned). King Arthur wanted everyone to be equal, therefore, he created a round table. No one was in a higher position, all were equal.

I never thought about that with the round table.  Do you think there's any significance in why paintings put Jesus in the middle?

Maybe it is because he should be the center of everything.  That is only a guess.  It could just be because if they put him at the head then he would be sideways and others would have the whole face showing.

Sometimes I think the best seat at the table is under the table with my grandmother's dog.

Sometimes I might want to hide under the table if I don't like what is getting served but I don't know about eating under there with my dog. He will eat anything no matter how gross it is.  He will eat liver.

With such a long table, the eye's natural foot fall is to the centre first. As an artist, Leonardo da Vinci wanted to make Jesus stand out; to that end, not only is Jesus central, but is wearing a red undershirt. Notice, how the disciples sitting next to him, are slightly leaning away; this separates Jesus from the others, and emphasizes his importance. When viewing paintings, it is important to look beyond the picture. Examine the back ground and discover small details. We have to use our brains, not just our optic nerves!
