Why do you forgive?

I recently heard someone say that letting someone know you forgive them shows that you are the bigger person and can devastate that person you forgave.  I commented that devastating someone with your forgiveness sounds like passive aggressive revenge.   It made me laugh but maybe people would like to think their forgiveness brings some sort of emotional justice on the person who wronged you or hurt you?

That's a different way to look at forgiveness. Revenge by forgiveness. That could be satisfying sometimes.

I will forgive Clare for getting me in trouble as long as it devastates her.

If you take joy in someone being devastated you are only pretending to forgive that person.

I think I can understand this a wee bit. When you tell someone you forgive them that someone will understand you have taken your power back and for some that is the last thing they want you to do.

I like how you explained that Libby and I hadn't thought of it that way.  I still think weaponizing forgiveness is an odd idea.

You can't weaponize forgiveness and still call it forgiveness.  Forgiveness is something we do to be free of anger and hatred.  If you wish ill on someone then you are still full of anger and hatred so there is no real forgiveness.
I think there are people who don't understand what forgiveness is about.

You mean like the parent who forgives you for being bad but still spanks you?

Saying I forgive you is easy but doing it is hard. Some people say it with sarcasm in there soul.
