Yes, wallowing "in guilt and self pity" aren't healthy but as parents I don't think we strive for the least unhealthy, we work for what is affirming and healthy. When Rosie was nine she lost her mom too. That's a lot of pain for a kid to have to endure and it can also eat away at their sense of security because they personally understand that the other parent can be here today and gone tomorrow. I do understand the challenge you face with that. I'm glad you're talking to someone for input on how to handle this. There are adults in the world who do self flagellation because they don't know any other way to do away with their guilt and then (as I'm sure you know) that line between pain and pleasure can become confused.
