Journal for next week is going to be thinking about the question of why did Jesus have to die on the cross. Why couldn't God just forgive everyone? I don't got an answer for that cause in my thinking God could of just forgave without making his son die. If God was going to make his son have to pay for everybody's sins then why make so many of us to sin? Do you ever feel bad that maybe something you did put a nail into Jesus? That is not a good thought but it is true. Isn't that sort of like Ruby getting punished for something I did bad?

That's a tough one sweetie. I don't believe Jesus had to die on the cross to earn God's forgiveness for all of us. God is the ultimate authority and can do whatever he wants. He can show us mercy or not with or without props. I'm not calling Jesus a prop. I think Jesus died on the cross so he could be resurrected. It was proof to the disciples that there is more than this lifetime. We are eternal and death isn't an end but a beginning.

It doesn't make sense to me but neither does creating someone who you're going to send to Hell.

With Christianity it's more like you're responsible for the sin of your great-great-great-great-dead long before you were born Grandmother.

Rosie, do you consider who's going to read what you write in your journal? Sometimes it's easier to give them what they want.

I know I got to be careful with what I write or they will maybe get mad at me if I am not thinking how they think I should be thinking.

Do you ever feel bad that maybe something you did put a nail into Jesus? That is not a good thought but it is true. I agree that this is not a good thought, and at least I believe that this is not true. It may be the natural scientist speaking, but I don't think anything we do now can affect the past at all. For your homework, Rosie, I think it is important to understand that this is about your thoughts and not about finding an answer. It is a question that very smart and educated people have discussed for ages and still haven't found a universally agreed upon answer to. I like Kim's focus on the resurrection and what it means for Christians (even though of course Jesus already resurrected Lazarus in is lifetime). The most interesting focus for me would be the "have to die" in the question, because it indicates that some kind of rules had to be followed. (I can state my obnoxious teen answer once you handed your work in. )

Can you be a Scientist and still believe in fairy tales? Why worship this God when you can have Zeus?

Can you be a Scientist and still believe in fairy tales? Why worship this God when you can have Zeus? I want to believe in free will, which in your words is a fairy tale, too. In more scientific terms, being unable to prove that something exists doesn't mean that it doesn't. Some things are too silly for me to believe in, though. As far as gods go, there are interesting stories about the ancient Greek ones, and Athena doesn't sound bad. But I still wouldn't want to live under a bunch of lightning-wielding bad-tempered weirdos. (And if I'm away for a while after posting this, then maybe Zeus did not approve of this message.)

I got to be writing about it all week so what is your obnoxious teen answer? It is the answer that obnoxious teen Tim would have considered giving, but it is not a good answer, so it wouldn't help you, sorry. Have you finished thinking about what everybody wrote in this thread already? And if I may ask, what was the exact question?

This school likes to heap on the guilt. Her question is, Why did Jesus have to die on the cross for my sins and how can I repay him for the suffering I caused? I guess it's supposed to motivate them to do what's right. @@

I don't know if that's a crazy question or simply a tough question. I do think it's a little short sighted because being a Christian is supposed to be about accepting and being grateful for God's forgiveness and not carrying around guilt and shame. I also think it's an unfair question because we don't know or understand the mind of God. He is a mystery in many ways. I would interested in learning why your bible teacher came up with this question. What's she (he?) looking for?
