Religion and it's influence on discipline and punishment

This was brought up on the forum....somewhere....God knows where but it's here.

What does your church/religious beliefs say about discipline and punishment?  Are you encouraged to spank?  Is there zero tolerance?  Does it allow for parental creativity?  You get the picture.

I'm Catholic and I've never heard a homily be about spanking.....they tend to be about forgiveness or eternal damnation.

There's nothing in writing but there have been sermons about it and the Pastor says a parent must spank hard enough to break a child's will.  The school I go to that is associated with my church uses paddling and they have the policy that anything other than immediate obedience is disobedience but they don't have a zero tolerance policy like the public school here does.
When they paddle at my school it isn't with those huge sorority paddles.  It's a small paddle about the size of a ping pong paddle.  There's no determined number of swats either but they believe in breaking the will of whoever is getting their butt paddled so it's best to give them a boo hoo at the start.  I did learn that the hard way.  I ended up with bruises from that paddling and that's not illegal unless a parent leaves bruises.  Weird isn't it?

Now picture me walking out of Mass right in the middle of the homily because that is what I would do if our Priest started talking like that.  That's rubbish.  Total rubbish.  What is wrong with your Pastor Addy?

My school talks about the rod but they don't get to hit us or nothing but they say parents should.

The church I go to does talk about spanking and parents are told they are failing their child if they don't spank.  I don't know if you ever heard of the Pearl method but it's based on that.  It's not 100% what that method is but it's close.

Michael Pearl?  He's still around?  I thought there were a lot of abuse allegations with his ministry?  If I remember correctly he advocates spanking babies.  What parts of his "ministry" does you church reject?

when did you get paddled at school? What did your parents say after?

It sounds like you are getting spanked all the time. I hope that is not true! You sound like a really good kid stuck around foolish adults!

That paddling wasn't recent.  I've been doing remote learning for a year now so it's been more than a year.
Sometimes it seems like I'm getting spanked all the time but there are a lot more days when I'm not getting spanked than days when I do.  We just talk about the times that any of us do.  It's been a lot more since I've been home all day, every day.

I don't know what parts but my mother says he is both inspired and obtuse.
